An ancient market town, Alnwick is still the commercial and social hub of the area. At the centre of Alnwick is the market square, flanked by the Northumberland Hall
and the town hall, which hosts the regular markets and festivals detailed below.
The town boasts a wide range of shops selling local produce, arts, crafts and gifts. Also, there are branches of Sainsbury's, Morrison's, Lidl, Homebase, Argos and WH Smiths.

Alnwick Food and Beer Festival
Many visitors are attracted to the town to visit Alnwick Castle, the ancestral seat of the Duke of Northumberland and Alnwick Garden, the most significant new garden built in the UK in recent years. Other attractions include Barter Books, one of the largest second hand book stores in the country and Bailiffgate Museum devoted to the history of Alnwick. The Alnwick Playhouse has a full programme of music, drama, films and exhibitions.
